In the Ancient Olympic Games, an athlete was not only expected to possess great agility and strength but also to understand and nurture the arts. By training the body in sport and the mind in art, literature, poetry, and music, the ancient Olympic Games aspired to produce more responsible and enriched citizens.
Al Oerter's vision turned towards those ancient Olympic ideals, and he founded Art of the Olympians. Olympian artists from across the world heard his call and began exhibitions and educational programs to teach our children the importance of integrity and high ideology through art and sports.
A year later, Al Oerter passed away, leaving a living tribute to encourage families and communities to be the best they can be in every area of life.
Al's wife Cathy, Olympians, and friends keep Al's last wish alive, giving inspirational, educational programs, contests, and exhibitions across the world.
In 2014 the foundation changed its name to the Al Oerter Foundation with Art of the Olympians their signature program.
The Al Oerter Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization established to educate the youth of the world about the values of respect, hard work, and fair-play with a vision to encourage self-confidence and a passion for excellence in all avenues of life. AOF honors and celebrates the character, principles, and ideals of the four-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Al Oerter.
